Google Rolls Out Critical Bug Fix for Pixel Phones in November Update

Google is set to release its November update for Pixel phones, which aims to resolve a crucial bug that had been causing severe issues for users with multiple profiles on their devices. This much-needed update, initially reported by 9to5Google, comes as a relief for Pixel 6 and later model users running Android 14.

The bug in question had been causing devices with multiple users enabled to display inaccurate storage information or get stuck in a reboot loop. Users affected by this bug had reported issues ranging from an inability to access their media storage to being entirely locked out of their phones, which sometimes necessitated a factory reset to regain control of the device.

For those facing media storage problems, the November update promises to restore access to their media, offering a glimmer of hope for a smoother user experience. However, for those trapped in a reboot loop, the situation is more complex. A previous update had noted that the fix Google was working on “may not enable data to be recovered for devices that are repeatedly rebooting.” This serves as a reminder to regularly back up your data, especially in cases where data recovery might not be possible.

The bug primarily affected Pixel phones with multiple user profiles, including child users, guests, and restricted profiles. Fortunately, it did not impact users running multiple Google accounts as the primary user on a device. This means that those using multiple Google accounts for work and personal use can breathe a sigh of relief.

The problem, while not widespread, had proven to be a significant inconvenience for those affected. Last week, Google advised users with Pixel phones running Android 14 not to create or log into another user profile due to the bug. With the rollout of today’s update, it is likely safe to do so, with one crucial caveat: always back up your data as a precautionary measure.

The update is expected to begin reaching Pixel phones today, and the rollout will continue over the next week. Users are encouraged to promptly update their devices to benefit from these critical bug fixes.
