Garmin Epix Pro Review

Epix Pro Review

Map Layout Enhancements:

So, previously, there were three map layout options available. You could choose a clean map page or have one or two data field overlays. However, there’s now a new split-screen layout, allowing you to display three data fields on the left-hand side against a black background. This layout offers a more convenient way to glance at your data compared to overlays, while still providing the context of your location on the map.

Another addition is the perimeter layout, which lets you surround the map with up to six different data fields. This layout is designed for data enthusiasts who want to view a large amount of data simultaneously while still seeing map details.

Additionally, the Epix Pros now support up to eight data fields on a data page across all three sizes.

Weather Map Overlays:

A noteworthy new feature is the weather map overlays, displaying precipitation, cloud cover, temperature, and wind direction. By accessing the weather widget’s map page, you can choose the information to overlay on the map.

For example, selecting precipitation will show any expected rain in your area. These overlays enhance your understanding of weather conditions. However, it’s important to note that these overlays are currently only available through the weather widget and not on the map page during activities.

Interface Improvements:

While the new features are commendable, there are a couple of areas where the interface could be improved. First, the labels on the temperature overlay and wind direction could be larger for better readability.

Additionally, the wind direction arrows do not scale as you zoom in, which means they may not be visible at smaller zoom levels. It would be beneficial if the arrows scaled down accordingly to improve usability. The data loading and map drawing process for these overlays may take a few seconds due to the substantial amount of information involved.

Convenient Access with the Recent Apps Menu:

Another notable addition is the new recents menu accessible by long-pressing the lower right-hand button. This menu displays the 15 most recently accessed widgets or apps, including during workouts.

Previously, long-pressing the button during an activity would return to the watch face, requiring you to scroll through all your widgets. It directly brings up the most recent widgets, allowing quick access.

To return to your ongoing activity, simply press the back button. Although you can still customize the hotkey behavior to return to the watch face and browse the complete list of widgets, the new recent apps function cannot be assigned to any hotkey combination.

Redshift Display Mode:

The Epix Pro introduces a new redshift display mode that turns the entire interface into shades of red. This mode aims to prevent sleep cycle disruptions caused by blue light, especially when viewing the watch at night. You can enable this mode manually through the controls menu or toggle it as an option in your display settings during sleep. Additionally, a hotkey combination can activate this mode for convenience.

Expanded Sports Profiles:

In terms of sport profiles, the Epix Pro inherits a vast list from the original Fenix 2, including running, cycling, gym, outdoor recreation, triathlon, swimming, adventure racing, obstacle course racing, hunting, fishing, boating, sailing, tactical activities, and jump master profiles.

Furthermore, over 30 new activity profiles have been added, matching those introduced with the Instinct 2X model. Fenix 2 owners will also receive these profiles through a software update.

Originals, audiobooks and podcasts—all in one place.

Endurance Score:

Garmin introduces a new metric called endurance score to complement training feedback. This metric aims to connect various existing metrics like training load and VO2 max, reflecting your ability to sustain performance over extended periods.

Endurance score takes into account all recorded activities as long as heart rate data is available, including running, cycling, swimming, hiking, weight training, yoga, and more. The feature highlights the activities that contribute most to your score.

Notably, the duration and intensity of different activities can impact your score, with consistent training at higher intensity levels also playing a role. There is no numerical cap on the endurance score, allowing for unlimited growth based on individual potential.

As a reference, a professional-level Ironman triathlete may achieve a score around 11,000. Training volume in terms of time appears to be a significant factor in the endurance score calculation, rather than just training load alone. Read more>>>
