The recently launched Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, boasting a host of new features, are making their way to customers, but a Reddit user report has raised concerns about the efficacy of the Face Unlock feature.

Initially, Google had emphasized the integration of Face Unlock for payments, asserting compliance with the highest Android biometric standard, Class 3. However, a user known as u/MotorTransportation8 has reported a peculiar behavior in the Pixel 8 Pro’s Face Unlock system. Despite noticeable differences, the system consistently recognized the user’s brother, raising questions about the reliability of the authentication method.

Face Unlock was reintroduced with the Pixel 7 series last year, employing machine learning and artificial intelligence advancements. The affected user speculates that the system may be mistakenly identifying the brothers as twins, suggesting it might be an isolated incident. The user also clarified that Extend Unlock, a feature designed to simplify the unlocking of nearby trusted Pixel devices, was not enabled during this occurrence.

Google’s accomplishment in achieving high security standards without dedicated hardware is noteworthy. However, as past incidents with other manufacturers have demonstrated, dedicated hardware, as employed by Apple’s Face ID, can also be susceptible to certain situations.

Apple acknowledges a higher likelihood of accidental matches with siblings or children under 13 due to developing facial features. It is plausible that the Pixel 8 Face Unlock system may encounter similar challenges, especially considering the incident involves a mixup with a sibling.

Despite this early hiccup, it’s important not to rush to judgments. As more customers receive their Pixel 8 pre-orders, further clarity on the Face Unlock system’s performance is anticipated.

In the midst of this, the Pixel 8 series has received positive feedback in durability tests, with JerryRigEverything’s recent assessment suggesting potential improvements over the Pixel 7 Pro. Durability holds a prominent role in the Pixel 8 series marketing, aligning with Google’s commitment to providing software updates and spare parts for seven years.
