IQOO 12 Review: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Powerhouse with Stunning Design and Stellar Camera

IQOO 12

The IQOO 12 has entered the smartphone arena with a bang, being one of the pioneer Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphones to launch globally. Boasting a BMW-inspired design, a dazzling AMOLED display, and a camera system that promises stunning night sky shots, the IQOO 12 seems to have a lot to offer.

In this in-depth review, we’ll explore the design, features, performance, and camera capabilities of the IQOO 12 to see if it lives up to the hype.

Unboxing and Design:

The unboxing experience of the IQOO 12 is accompanied by a sense of excitement, with the sleek design of the phone itself immediately catching the eye. The package includes a powerful 120W adapter, a USB cable, a protective case, and some BMW-themed materials, showcasing the collaboration. The design of the IQOO 12 is undeniably premium, featuring an aluminum alloy frame, a flat AMOLED display, and a porcelain enamel glass rear.

The glossy white model, inspired by BMW Motorsport, adds a touch of elegance, while the substantial camera setup at the rear protrudes, serving as an interesting design element. While the device is not IP68 water and dust resistant, the overall design is impressive and sets the stage for further exploration.

Features and FunTouch OS:

Unlocking the IQOO 12 is a breeze with the optical in-display fingerprint sensor or facial recognition. The FunTouch OS offers a near-stock Android experience, with a familiar layout and customization options.

However, it comes pre-loaded with some bloatware, which might disappoint users looking for a cleaner experience. Despite a few bugs in the pre-release software, the performance has been commendable.

Display and Audio:

The IQOO 12’s display is a standout feature, boasting a 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED screen with a 2K resolution. The visuals are sharp, and the HDR 10+ support ensures an immersive viewing experience. The display’s refresh rate varies between 1 and 144 Hz, catering to different use cases.

The device also features stereo speakers, providing clear and powerful audio output. While lacking Dolby Atmos support, the inclusion of Super Audio AIO allows users to customize sound output based on their preferences.

Performance and Gaming:

The IQOO 12’s performance is where it truly shines, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and a whopping 16GB of RAM. Geekbench scores are impressive, showcasing the device’s processing prowess.

The gaming experience is enhanced by the Q1 Super Computing chip, offering features like game frame interpolation and game super resolution. The vapor chamber and thermal layer ensure that the device remains cool, even during extended gaming sessions.

Battery Life:

The IQOO 12’s 5,000mAh battery impresses with its longevity, providing 9 to 10 hours of screen-on time for general use and 5 to 6 hours of continuous gaming. The combination of a high-capacity battery and the power-efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset contributes to this stellar battery performance. Additionally, the 120W wired charging support allows for quick replenishment, though the absence of wireless charging may be a downside for some users.

Camera System:

The triple-lens camera system on the IQOO 12 includes a 50MP primary shooter, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens with OIS. The primary camera excels in capturing detailed shots, while the ultra-wide-angle lens maintains consistency in image quality.

Originals, audiobooks and podcasts—all in one place.

The telephoto lens offers a 3x optical zoom, with acceptable results up to around 20 to 30 times zoom. The video recording capabilities, including 8K support, deliver respectable results, though low-light conditions may pose a challenge. The 16MP selfie camera provides satisfactory results, especially in natural mode.

Conclusion:

The IQOO 12 stands out as a flagship smartphone with a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, an impressive display, and a capable camera system. The design exudes premium quality, and the FunTouch OS offers a user-friendly experience.

While the device lacks some features found in other flagships, such as IP68 rating and wireless charging, its overall performance, battery life, and camera capabilities make it a strong contender in the competitive smartphone market. If you’re in the market for a powerhouse device with a unique design, the IQ2 is certainly worth considering.
