Tecno POVA 6 Neo Review: A Budget Powerhouse with Impressive Battery Life

The budget smartphone market is crowded, but Tecno has managed to carve out a niche with its latest release, the POVA 6 Neo. Featuring a massive 7000 mAh battery and a design reminiscent of high-end gaming phones, this device promises exceptional endurance and a unique user experience. After two weeks of hands-on testing, here’s an in-depth look at what the POVA 6 Neo has to offer and whether it lives up to the hype.

Design and Build Quality

The design of the POVA 6 Neo is quite distinctive, evoking a gaming phone aesthetic reminiscent of the ROG Phone series. This design choice is polarizing; you’ll likely either love it or hate it. Personally, I find the design appealing, though it does come with some drawbacks.

One major issue is the glossy finish. While it looks sleek and modern, it is a magnet for fingerprints and smudges. I often find myself wiping the phone to keep it clean, which can be quite bothersome. A matte finish might have been a better choice to avoid this problem.

The POVA 6 Neo is also notable for its size. It is a tall and thick device, which might be uncomfortable for users with smaller hands. Despite its substantial dimensions, the phone isn’t excessively heavy. It has a bit of heft to it, but not enough to be burdensome. This balance between size and weight contributes to its overall usability.

The placement of buttons and ports is well thought out. On the right side of the phone, you’ll find the power and volume buttons. The power button doubles as a fingerprint sensor, which is a convenient feature that works reliably. The volume buttons, though small, are very tactile and responsive. On the left side, there’s a SIM and SD card tray that supports two SIM cards and an SD card, offering flexibility for users who need dual SIM functionality and expandable storage.

At the bottom, you’ll find the headphone jack, microphone, USB-C port, and one of the two speakers. The other speaker is located at the top. These speakers are the first on a Tecno phone to be equipped with Dolby Atmos, which enhances the audio experience. The POVA 6 Neo also has an IP53 rating, making it resistant to water and splashes. However, it’s important to avoid submerging the phone in water.

Display Quality

The POVA 6 Neo features a 6.78-inch LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 1080p. On paper, these specifications are impressive for a budget device. While an AMOLED display would have been preferable, Tecno’s choice of a higher refresh rate over display technology is understandable. The higher refresh rate makes for smoother scrolling and a more responsive experience, which is beneficial for gaming and general use.

The display itself is sharp and produces good colors, making it enjoyable for watching movies, streaming YouTube videos, and general browsing. The high refresh rate is particularly noticeable when navigating the UI and playing compatible games. However, the display does have some limitations.

One significant drawback is its brightness. The screen maxes out at 500 nits, which can be problematic when using the phone outdoors in direct sunlight. Visibility is noticeably reduced, making it difficult to read text or view images clearly. This limitation is a common issue with many budget LCD displays.

Despite this, the display performs well indoors and in shaded environments. For most users, the screen will be more than adequate for everyday tasks and media consumption.

Performance and Hardware

Under the hood, the POVA 6 Neo is powered by the Helio G99 Ultimate processor. This chipset is one of the best options in the budget smartphone category, delivering solid performance for everyday tasks. The phone handles basic operations smoothly, including web browsing, social media, and light gaming.

The device comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, which is generous for a phone in this price range. The RAM can be extended to 16GB with virtual RAM, providing extra headroom for multitasking and more demanding applications. This configuration ensures that the POVA 6 Neo can handle most tasks without significant slowdowns or lag.

Gaming performance is respectable for a budget device. The Helio G99 can run popular mobile games at medium settings with acceptable frame rates. While it won’t compete with high-end gaming phones, it offers a good balance of performance and efficiency for casual gamers.

Battery Life and Charging

One of the standout features of the POVA 6 Neo is its impressive battery life. The phone is equipped with a massive 7000 mAh battery, which provides exceptional endurance. For average users, this battery can easily last two days on a single charge.

During our testing, we put the phone on movie streaming mode for about two hours and only lost around 10% of the battery. This translates to approximately 14 hours of video streaming on a full charge. For gaming, the battery life is slightly lower at around 10 hours. Tecno claims that the phone can provide up to 39 hours of talk time, which is quite impressive.

Charging the POVA 6 Neo is a mixed experience. The phone supports 33W wired fast charging, which is decent but not outstanding given the large battery capacity. It takes about two hours to fully charge the phone from empty. While this isn’t the fastest charging speed, it is acceptable considering the phone’s battery life.

Many users might prefer faster charging times, but given that the battery lasts an entire day, charging overnight should be sufficient for most people. Additionally, the phone includes battery protection features to help maintain battery health over time, which is a thoughtful addition.

Software and User Experience

The POVA 6 Neo runs on HiOS 14, based on Android 14. This custom skin includes several features and optimizations that enhance the user experience. The software includes redesigned app icons, new wallpapers, lock screen customization, and a bit of Material You integration, which allows for a more personalized look and feel.

One useful feature is the search functionality in the AI Gallery, which allows users to find images by typing in keywords. While not 100% accurate, it works well enough to be a helpful tool for organizing and locating photos.

The Dynamic Port feature is another interesting addition. It is visible when using certain apps, such as the voice recorder, and provides quick access to related functions and settings. This feature adds a layer of convenience and usability to the phone’s software.

Overall, HiOS 14 offers a smooth and responsive experience. The interface is user-friendly, and the added features enhance the overall functionality of the device.

Camera Performance

The POVA 6 Neo is equipped with a dual-camera setup: a 50-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. While these specifications are decent for a budget phone, the actual performance of the cameras is somewhat underwhelming.

In good lighting conditions, the main camera can capture decent photos. The colors are vibrant, and the HDR feature helps balance out the exposure in challenging lighting situations. However, the images tend to be soft and lack the sharpness and detail found in more premium devices. The dynamic range is also limited, which can result in blown-out highlights and lost details in shadows.

The selfie camera shares similar characteristics. It produces acceptable results for social media use, but the images lack the clarity and detail that more advanced sensors provide. The photos are also prone to noise in low-light conditions, further reducing their quality.

Video recording is another area where the POVA 6 Neo falls short. The camera can record at 1080p, but the footage lacks detail and sharpness. The colors are good, and the stabilization is effective, but the overall video quality is mediocre. As with still photography, providing ample lighting can help improve the results, but the limitations of the hardware are still apparent.

Overall, the camera setup on the POVA 6 Neo is suitable for basic photography and casual use, but it won’t satisfy users looking for high-quality images and videos.

Price and Value

The Tecno POVA 6 Neo is priced at around $140, positioning it as a competitive option in the budget smartphone market. For this price, the phone offers a unique design, solid performance, a decent display, and exceptional battery life. While the camera quality is average and the charging speed could be faster, the overall package is quite compelling for budget-conscious consumers.

Conclusion

The Tecno POVA 6 Neo is a well-rounded budget smartphone that stands out in several key areas. Its distinctive design may not appeal to everyone, but it provides a unique look that sets it apart from other budget phones. The performance is solid, thanks to the Helio G99 processor and ample RAM and storage.

The display is good for everyday use, though it struggles in bright outdoor conditions. The camera setup is adequate for basic photography and casual use but won’t satisfy those looking for high-quality images and videos. The standout feature, however, is the battery life. The 7000 mAh battery provides exceptional endurance, making the POVA 6 Neo an excellent choice for users who prioritize long battery life.

At $140, the POVA 6 Neo offers great value for its price. It is a strong contender in the budget smartphone market, particularly for those who need a reliable device with excellent battery performance. If you’re in the market for a budget-friendly phone with impressive battery life and decent overall performance, the Tecno POVA 6 Neo is definitely worth considering.
