In a major announcement, Xiaomi has unveiled its latest flagship, the Xiaomi 14 series, along with a new Android skin overlay named HyperOS. This move marks a significant shift from the previous MIUI, promising enhanced user experience and performance.
However, along with the introduction of HyperOS, Xiaomi has also implemented stringent policies regarding bootloader-unlocked devices. The company clarified that it will not provide updates for devices with unlocked bootloaders, regardless of whether they are running HyperOS or MIUI 14.
Moreover, unlocking a Xiaomi device, especially those with HyperOS, will now be a more complex process. Currently, users must submit an application through the company’s Windows app and wait for one week before they can unlock the bootloader. For HyperOS users in China, additional criteria have been set, requiring them to achieve level 5 on the community forums in addition to the one-week waiting period. Users outside of China will have to await an official announcement from Xiaomi regarding the new unlocking process.
It’s important to note that re-locking the device will allow users to promptly receive the next HyperOS update.
Additionally, Xiaomi is imposing a new restriction, allowing only three device unlocks per year. While currently, this limitation is specific to China, Xiaomi has not ruled out the possibility of extending it to other markets.
When questioned about these strict measures, Xiaomi cited security concerns as the primary motivation behind the decision to impose these restrictions, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding user data and device integrity.
As Xiaomi enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the launch of the Xiaomi 14 series, the new HyperOS and its associated policies are sure to be a topic of discussion among the tech community. Stay tuned for further updates on this development.
